Magic relies on a transfer of energies that will not translate well through space, hence there are no long-ranged effects. You have to touch a target in order to affect them, or else have some other transfer medium such as an enchanted item. However, once a spell is cast its effects can continue after contact is lost… Even indefinitely!
You can cast a number of spells each day equal to the number of spells you know, but they do not have to be “one of each”. For example, if you know how to cast three Lesser spells, you will have three Lesser spell “slots” each day, which you can use to cast each spell once, the same spell three times, or any combination. You can even use a higher level “slot” to cast a lower level spell, but not the other way around (i.e. a Greater “slot” could be used to cast a Lesser spell, but a Lesser “slot” couldn’t cast a Greater spell).
Magic Type descriptions include a short list of some of the more commonly known Powers that the spells in those types grant the caster. If you choose Magical Ability (and any additional spells) during Character Generation, you will be contacted with your specific spells, but there are many more out in the world waiting to be found.
Spells come in three levels, and when you learn your first spell of a given level your Fame increases:
Lesser (+2 Fame)
Greater (+2 Fame)
Arcane (+2 Fame)
You may not learn more spells of a level than you have in the level below it, of the same Type.
Each time you learn a spell, you will be given a Spell Card within the game to show that you can cast it (and give you details about what it does).
